Group 2

AL: I'ts on the etherpad!

FS: Apart from the track ... have been mentally opening the file on: "now that we've relearned from three relearns what could we do to continue?", what could be relearn and if there could be something else. trying to think what to take on to a larger/continous? another level, space.
S: Next edition using previous editions's archive as a material (>Anita&co)?
FS: Or: Could it be something else? Or: Also something else? Rethinking the way we live with education both as students and teachers ...
AL : Learning situations that offers (institutional studying) credits for students that participates? A time issue. Relearn is interesting because it's designed as there is no compulsory outcome : if you're not technical you can still participate
HL: Relearn is a space to explore ... because it is not formatted. Fear that when institutionalising, it wil loose that.
AL: I am such a fan of Relearn. It has made a lot happen. But: it is also a beautiful impossible pressure cooker!
FS: Sigh. So now it is on the pad.

S: I did not do many things .. trouble finding a good groove. It s so hard, to manage to make/keep it funky. Each edition, a different energy.

AL: Talk to us!

S: I felt shy about digging in ...

AL: So, it is not on the server?

S: I don't find it interesting (the things I produced) ... I have a strange relation to Relearn. More interested in things around tracks. It has a huge influence, but it is not so much the things I actually do.

CC: I did very basic things, but happy about it. Set up a radio frequency transmitting the text of the wirelessness etherpad over modem sounds. Understood how wireless works. Brought things I was working on before, good to work on. I might not appear to be so active (so present/visible) but I take a lot form this week.

HL: Difficult to make it into a track, everything went in all directions. More communality? Feels forced.

FS: You talked about exploring. What did you explore?

HL: Looking into different tools around. All in varying contexts. Today, people seemed to get a grip on it.

AL: Relearn is impossible :-D Too many things to think, do. Got caught by the track 'training common sense'. I feel like I started out the wrong way. The idea to engage with a software on a filelevel. To spend a few days with a certain package, felt like a learning, but freeing. Not sure in what way it is useful, legible ... nothing is finished. It feels strange but good.
During the session we tried to study the tool together, understanding how it worked. Some had previous experience, others not. We though about how to share this material, so we decided, because it is FLOSS, to clone the package and make a 'critical fork', by annotating and adding comments.

Sometimes we were searching for holes ... sometimes just trying to understand. Very detailed research.

FS: Looking into a software package with a group of ppl that is interested in studying and not so much into doing a project about it was really exciting. We were reading scientific articles about it and trying to help each other out driven by curiosity. School I dream of. Thinking about how to keep track of that process, free software helped us with thinking we could fork this project. What does it mean to engage with software not just as a critical theoretician, or technician
 [[training-common-sense-pattern-readme-plus.md]]

H: Are there plans to continue?

FS: Manetta is preparing her final project at Piet Zwart, she will be the one carrying the project for a while. At some point we could come help her. In the meantime other groups have been working with this issue. A group that has been following the course in Antwerp. One in NY concerned about privacy. I would like to try and make the actual release, just a matter of finding the right time that is generous but rigorous somehow.

H: That shows all the tensions in it, without showing one position.

F: This way of working It's a pandora's box, or a russian doll. We have work for years of study, but if we manage to get a group of people working on it in the next year, I think we could make a release.

AL: remembers Aymeric's discussion of forking as erasure (destructive). This would be another way.

Surprising to see the focus on customer reviews and sentiments

HL: different view on translations between math and language. Different kinds of visibility. Combination between simplifying and aggregation. ../training-common-sense/turning_text_into_numbers.html

M: worked on etherdump script.
../etherdump/
is (will be) trace of all the pads
and this is the script
../etherdump/etherdumphttp://10.9.8.7/etherdump/etherdump
not much in a track, worked more on infrastructural level
whole question of how to turn something ephemeral into a publication. Heard from andrea and manetta - there a re a number of people interested in publishing
Q: what does the script do?
takes html file and makes them into static files (that don't need a server!)
etherpad precarious tool
etherpad is quite fragile in the end, javascript backend, webserver, all these scripts need to be running for etherpad to work. Attempts to take the multiplicity of voices and make it less like "the bible"

T: installed SDR software
what is that? softwear to find radio. Also mini-modem was good to hear about nooo leave it like that : "software to find radio" so poetic!
see [[wirelessness]]
mini-modem: data to sound!
continued previous work on
instead of text-to-speech text-to-song!... Karaoke

M:
worked on
dada engine,
wirelessness
had fun, but felt lost because she missed a bit of the start
was difficult to join the tracks at a later point

R: tool-introduction, first two days into wireless - went well , then we had the walk and antenas
luckily there was no storm on sunday during
the walk
then joined some other tracks to snoop around
. Worked a bit on etherdump with M
in a lot of discussions - steering, planning, org, etc etc - which also made me feel a bit split, but still
had time to play
Q: was the split a malfunction?
(the nerd in me says yes, it was  ;)
playing that the server count was not all the way down...
../6/5/4/3/2/1/0/
people went in different directions which also gave me different options/ideas
"where is the internet?"
at some point there were tons of hotspots. I took a screenshot. (m)
created many hotspots
these are also ways to deal with the fact you have a physical device, invert  - open up and question wireless infrastructure

video grab
weekly address from president->on social media->
this is very well subtitled, so you can add a timecode to the subtitles
so every time he says americains
videopy (or pyvideo?) detects word e.g. "american" in subtitles and crop video
other experiment: take all texts->generate new text->patch together video fragments
->it does something special, not really like a montage, quality of the footage in these compilations is normally pretty bad grabbed footage
(n.b.: see casette boy's version of David Cameron speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YBumQHPAeU  )

also worked on tool scripts-->linux

one version of the new soup: (what was put in music earlier by Thiago)

osp@osp:~/applications 2015/Relearn 2015/text generation/soup with C$ dada mine.pb
MINESTRONE is a traditional Roman soup that consists mostly of vegetables, such
as: a network with an attitude, reroam, methodology croissants, dada engines,
rinsed fractals, lentils, failures, minestrone pattern and pb files. This
version is a bit simpler, but basically follows the same method and combination
of ingredients.
INGREDIENTS: network with an attitude and parsley, carrots, pocket servers,
bread, IP addresses, coffee, methodology croissants, scripts, meta antennas,
300 Shakespeare letters, dada engines, 10 tables, fractals, bags of chopped
words, pads, mixed herbs, ethernet cables, green parmiggiano, failures, celery,
party, portleaves, minestrone pattern, raw data, learning situations,
stereotypes, pb files, 50 spoons.
METHOD:
10:00 Step 1: Saute chopped pocket servers, diced IP adresses and scripts in
olive oil until lightly colored. As soon as done: add diced fresh dada engines.
10:30 Step 2: Fry pb files and stereotypes until they start to dissolve. Add
tinned pads and half of the chopped parsley.
11:00 Step 3: Check that the soup is boiling softly. Stir gently, add 3
portleaves and 300 Shakespeare letters.
12:00 Step 4: Add reroam and stir playfully. :)
13:30 Step 5: MINE THE STRONE!

Was sometimes difficult while switching. Needed to find someone to introduce the track. Then it worked well.

nta
Not really hands on anything toolwise. Did not really open a new tool. Mostly discussing, tried to include reroam into the school. But felt conflicted discussing how reroam shouldnt be outside of the school but leaving the tracks to discuss it
Also first two days helping to put a finger on the tension that were present in data quantification track.
G: You might have seen more of relearn by not participating in tracks?
A: Cannot fit what I have done in the vocabulary of the presentation of a project. --->oh ../crap/blop.txt

could we say you have been an antenna to tensions? - yes and facillitating antenna-ness in other ppl too.

once upon a time..............

example 1 'crime'

Once upon a time there were 4 lobbyists, and their names were Peter38, Mopsy92, Mopsy50, Mopsy91.
The smartest, Mopsy50, proposed to go and look for the most disgusting proofs in the archives of Leopold III.
'Wonderful idea!' said Mopsy91.
They started searching through thousands of files.
Leopold III sensed something strange, he noticed the lobbyists and informed his private detective and bodyguards.
Poor Mopsy50 got caught!

Mopsy91 had the ingenious idea to distract the guards and they fled all together from the archives.
When Mopsy50 went to bed that night, she felt the most lucky of all lobbyists.

THE END.

example 2 'fairy tale'

Once upon a time there were 3 nasty snakes, and their names were Peter20, Peter13, Mopsy5.
The smartest, Peter13, proposed to go and look for the sweetest cherries in the kitchen of Leopold III.
'Wonderful idea!' said Mopsy5.
They followed the sewer, climbed up through the tubes till they found the sink.
Leopold III sensed something strange, he noticed the nasty snakes and informed his private detective and bodyguards.
Poor Peter13 got caught!

Mopsy5 had the ingenious idea to kill the guards and they fled all together from the kitchen.
When Peter13 went to bed that night, she felt the most lucky of all nasty snakes.

THE END.

example 3: 'erotic'
Once upon a time there were 7 swimmers, and their names were Mopsy51, Peter46, Flopsy36, Flopsy71, Peter58, Peter66, Cotton-tail51.
The smartest, Peter66, proposed to go and look for the juiciest bites in the fantasies of King.
'Wonderful idea!' said Cotton-tail51.
They dressed up to party crash King's birthday dinner.
King sensed something strange, he noticed the swimmers and informed his private detective and bodyguards.
Poor Peter66 got caught!

Cotton-tail51 had the ingenious idea to distract the guards and they fled all together from the fantasies.
When Peter66 went to bed that night, she felt the most lucky of all swimmers.

absurd machine communication - digital divides

the screaming of the machine - turning text into high pitched noises that fill the ether, devoided of human understanding, passed back into machines, regulating, self-regulating, translating into nothingness.

the data of the user - endless sequences of analogue input, mapped into arrays, modulated, dumped into the interface. syn, ack, syn/ack, send, receive, report back, checksum, all is well, plot onto screen, done.

squeeking without meaning, mixing in the voice.

prototype of the format I will use : more or less static html, and dynamic etherpad :
../training-common-sense/turning_text_into_numbers.html

Transversal trinity track had no location.
"I had no proper place to be"
spoke individually with some people
"I wanted to talk to everybody at the same time"
which is somehow too 'expensive' for the bigger group...
20 years project for a linguistic software system
"How to have a converstion with unlimited amount of participants through a 'network', not so much on spoken language."
The common sense track was the nearest track that fitted my personal project.
and so i could add to some specific elements of the exploration process of the track.
Helped to explain the process of the Pattern tool of the common sense.
The tool is shitty, so i helped to explain them why the tool is shitty. The group wanted to understand how it works.

Side stories :
during 'cinematic walk', in the new pedestrian area in the center of Brussels  : conversation about a version of Chess with pieces played by human beings in an italian city near bassano di grappa
gave me the idea of transforming Chess into a team game : instead of a conventional player deciding the moves, have the set of humans incarnating the pieces decide the next move.
All that is needed is a phone app.
A more democratic game would be Draughts (checkers).

In the beginning in the 'cinematic city' track
for me the issue was to map our discussions ([[city)]]
its difficult when you talk about maps because of the 'power' element in it
power of the geographical map, but had an interest in looking at topic-maps
I made an etherpad map!
(( 1) )) *WE ARE HERE. (( 2) ))========||======== ((| ||3) \ ))| || 7) \ ((| || \ ))| 4)||================== ((| || 6) \ 8) ))| 5)|| .-' ((`. || 9) .-' )) `. || .-' (( `. || .-' )) `.||-'The front of the Horta building close to Zienneke (at point 1 in the map) , that was taken down and lied down in an empty building.
The walk around the building inspired many of the ideas and thoughts discussed in the track
Its interesting that from one random point you are able to connect to other(larger) narratives
for now it resulted into:
method --> urban exploration

Lot of fun at the common sense track. [[training-common-sense]]
intense but good!
\a main thing during the week was the presentation about Vectro space (Hans) on when matematical meaning is transforemed into semantical meaning
lot of things happened, in a general sense maybe..
learned a lot of ways of working. looking to datamining package 'pattern' we discussed a new release for pattern.
that's the pattern-2.6-critical-fork mentioned above. making annotations, alternative readme, alternative tutorials..
moments that are questionable. main thing is critical comments, there might be technical software elements as well, that is open..
../training-common-sense/sources/software/pattern-2.6-critical-fork/ !!
Some people was changing the files and then results with change.. for example to search for the abracadabra mentioned above..
